The Somerton Library Trust
SOMERTON LIBRARY SAVED
On Monday, 1st April, Somerton Library will transfer from the central management of Somerset County Council to a Community Library Partnership led by The Somerton Library Trust. There will be an opening ceremony at the library at 1400 - Cox’s Yard, 8 West St, Somerton TA11 7PR.
On 5 November 2018, Somerset County Council announced that it would no longer fund the operation of a number of Somerset libraries and offered those libraries the option of joining Community Library Partnerships. Somerton Library was included on that list.
Somerton’s Community Library Partnerships is an exciting venture that will underpin the operation and maintenance of a public library in Somerton for the foreseeable future. The County Council has pledged funding assistance and the provision of the library service infrastructure for at least 7 years. As a partnership, Somerton will maintain a Library Service with slightly reduced opening hours for 5 days a week; this will be achieved with the support of local volunteers who will work with a full-time professional librarian in the delivery of the Library Service. Somerton Town Council has been instrumental in the formation of The Somerton Library Trust and has committed funding that is essential to the continued operation of the Library. Local parishes, community bodies and individuals have also contributed most generously. Using the Community Library Partnership agreement as a springboard for the future, The Trust will be working closely with The Friends of Somerton Library to broaden the range of community activities centred on the Library in the heart of this magnificent Somerset town.
Notes for Editors:
The Library Trust was established on 11 January 2019 and currently has 7 trustees.
When the ownership of the library building has been transferred from Somerset County Council (SCC) to Somerton Town Council (STC), the Trust will lease the building from STC for a peppercorn rent.
SCC’s Core Offer provides: help, technical support, training and guidance, the supply of lending and reference stock and ICT equipment, software and support.
The Trust will pay SCC for the services of professional librarians to man the library. The Trust will be responsible for: Health and Safety; Equality and Diversity; Safeguarding; Facilities Management, as well as budgeting, finance and fund raising.
