About the Charltons
The Charltons consist of Charlton Adam, Charlton Mackrell and West Charlton which, together with Kingsdon, form the Parish benefice. Lying about 4 miles east of Somerton their combined population is just over 2000. The villages date back to the time of the Domesday Book.

Before the Conquest Charlton Adam was held by three thegns with one clerk, and in 1086 by Reginald de Vautort from Robert, Count of Mortain while Charlton Mackrell was held by Aethelfrith, and in 1086 by Roger Arundel himself.
